The story of how Spruce began is quite a relatable one. Wanting to reduce plastic consumption and lessen the use of toxic chemicals in our homes is something we all want to do, but Mahira Kalim took initiative.

After having her second child, she realized how much her plastic consumption had gone up, and began thinking about what she could change in her everyday routine. This feeling, along with wanting to keep herself and her children away from toxic chemicals, is what pushed Spruce along.

With having plenty of background knowledge in startups, Mahira knew she could do it, but knew she had much to learn about the eco-world. She conducted a great deal of market research and looked to her professional network for help and advice. Through this, she learned that she’s not the only one with a desire for this type of product, and most importantly, people were excited about it.

Soon enough, Spruce was born, and it launched on Kickstarter in September of 2020. The company sells refillable aluminium “Eternity” bottles and sachets of non-toxic cleaning solution to mix into water; providing an eco-friendly, single-use plastic-free, and non-toxic alternative to our everyday cleaning routine.

The sachets of solution can be composted at home and will decompose within 14 weeks, whereas regular plastic could remain in the ecosystem for 500 years or more. Not only are the products themselves eco-friendly, but Kalim also wanted to make sure shipping emissions were low, so she sources all packaging materials and ingredients from within the EU to reduce the company’s carbon footprint.
